Willow Class - EYFS
Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision is carefully structured to bridge the transition into formal learning, ensuring that every child is nurtured within our loving, Christian community. We believe in "starting from tiny beginnings," where pupils are encouraged to show independence, work collaboratively, and develop a genuine curiosity about the world around them.
Discovering the World Around Us
In Year R, "Understanding the World" is explored through immersive, play-based learning that prioritises our natural environment. Our woodland setting and Forest School are integral classrooms, where pupils investigate the changing seasons, habitats, and the community right on their doorstep. This hands-on exploration establishes the foundational concepts of history and geography—learning about their own identity, their family, and the local community—that will serve as the bedrock for their future humanities studies as they move through the school.
Science and Nature
Curiosity is at the heart of our scientific inquiry. Year R pupils build foundational skills by observing, questioning, and experimenting with the physical world. Whether exploring the properties of water, planting in our sensory garden, or tracking the growth of our class plants, children develop the basic observational skills that lead to formal scientific investigation. Our environment promotes "awe and wonder," encouraging children to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them in a safe, supported setting.
Mastering the Fundamentals of Literacy and Maths
We lay the essential groundwork for future academic success through high-quality, structured provision. Literacy starts with our focus on phonic knowledge, where pupils develop the skills to decode and write words, progressing to simple sentences. We foster a love of reading through shared stories and active engagement with texts. In Maths, we focus on fluency and number sense—using concrete, pictorial, and abstract approaches to master counting, place value, and patterns. These early mathematical experiences ensure that pupils are fully prepared for the National Curriculum as they progress into Year 1.
Creativity, Well-being, and Personal Growth
The spiritual, social, and emotional development of our children is paramount. Rooted in our Christian values of Faith, Hope, and Love, we teach children the habits of character—compassion, integrity, independence, reflection, resilience, and collaboration—through every activity. Pupils express themselves through art, music, and role-play, while physical development is nurtured through continuous access to our wonderful school grounds and collaborative play. By the end of Year R, our goal is for every child to feel safe, valued, and ready for the next step of their primary education.
