Maple Class - Years 3 & 4
Our Years 3 and 4 mixed-age curriculum operates on a two-year rotational cycle. By weaving core knowledge and progressive skills around central concepts, our multi-year setup ensures that every child continuously deepens their understanding while making meaningful cross-curricular links.
Discovering the Past and Exploring the World
Our humanities curriculum expands outwards in a connected cycle—moving from ancient civilizations to local heritage, and from regional geography to global trade. Students contrast the majestic, early organised societies of Ancient Egypt with pre-historic Britain in Stone Age to Iron Age and the eventual invasion of Roman Britain. .Spatial understanding expands from a Tale of 3 Cities and local history in Andover to investigating ethical global systems through Fairtrade and food origins.
Science Inquiry and the Natural World
Scientific learning is structured around deep investigative topics, shifting between biological systems and physical forces. Whilst Year A focuses on biological foundations through Animals Including Humans, Plants, and Habitats. Year B examines the physical world through Rocks, Forces & Magnets, States of Matter, and Light & Sound.
Mastering the Fundamentals of Literacy and Maths
Our core academic framework ensures foundational skills are continually applied to complex, real-world contexts.Reading and writing are taught through whole-class novel studies. Students refine writing to entertain, inform, and persuade—crafting setting descriptions, character profiles, diary entries, and recounts based on class texts like The Iron Man, Street Child, and mythical stories.
In both years, children develop mathematical fluency, based on the White Rose maths scheme, by securing core Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division in the Autumn. As the year progresses, they apply these skills to complex concepts like Fractions, Decimals, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics, Area, and Perimeter. It is essential that children learn their times tables by the end of Year 4 to ensure they are well prepared for the demands of Year 5 and 6.
Creativity, Technology and Physical Health
Our foundation subjects enrich the core curriculum, weaving creative arts, digital skills, and physical well-being into broader learning topics. Creative media directly reflect class topics such as Egyptian Clay Canopic Jars, architecture drawings, and pavilion structures to Andy Warhol Pop Art, printing, slingshot mechanisms, and seasonal food.
Conversational French progresses through greetings, food, school life, and culture. Concurrently Music explores global soundscapes from Indian traditions, Rivers, and Rainforest percussion to Chinese New Year pentatonic scales, Roman motifs, and Mountain compositions. Within each year, the class has the opportunity to play an instrument through ‘Listen to Me’ where a specialist Hampshire music teacher teaches the class.
Progression in technology moves from emailing, Scratch coding, and Video Trailers to Networks, HTML web design, data handling (weather/comparison cards), and collaborative tools. Children have a class set of Chromebooks that they use as a tool for learning.
Physical Education - Children refine key movement skills across a diverse range of sports, progressing through gymnastics, cheerleading, netball, athletics, tag rugby, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, tennis, and cricket. Sports leaders organise half-termly house competitions linked to the sport in focus.
