Our Years 5 and 6 curriculum also operates on a two-year rotational cycle designed to prepare students for the demands of secondary education. By revisiting core concepts through a sophisticated, multi-layered framework, children build deep subject mastery, make explicit cross-curricular connections, and step into their roles as confident, independent learners.
Discover the Past and Exploring the World
Our humanities framework challenges older learners to compare global civilizations, analyse historical law and power structures, and investigate dynamic planetary geography. Students contrast early non-European power and achievements in the Ancient Maya and Central America alongside classical antiquity in Ancient Greece with British societal shifts in Crime & Punishment through the ages and the impact of the Anglo-Saxons to Vikings.Geographical enquiry spans continents, moving from dynamic regional studies of North and South America (to analysing natural disasters, weather systems, and environmental impacts in Extreme Earth. .
Science Inquiry and the Natural World
Scientific investigation moves into high-level conceptual understanding and rigorous testing methods. Students explore biological mechanisms through Evolution, Inheritance, Life Cycles, and Reproduction. In the alternate year this shifts to human biology and microbiology through the study of Heart, Health, Circulatory Systems, Microorganisms, and the anatomy of the Eye.Students investigate physical phenomena, studying Gravity, Forces, Earth, and Space, Circuit Electricity, Properties and Changes of Materials, and Light & Shadows.
Mastering the Fundamentals of Literacy and Maths
Novel-based reading instruction develops sophisticated analytical skills and exposes students to a wide variety of themes and genres. Writing instruction focuses on advanced registers guiding students to write to inform, entertain, discuss, and persuade through formal essays, balanced arguments, biographies, character viewpoints, persuasive speeches, and complaint letters. Students are taught more sophisticated grammar and punctuation and apply these appropriately.
Across both years, students solidify core arithmetic and place value in the Autumn before advancing into abstract mathematical reasoning. They master Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio, Algebra, Geometry, Unit Conversions, Area, Perimeter, and Angles in order to secure mathematical readiness.
Creativity, Technology and Physical Health
Practical design reflects cultural and technical themes ranging from Mayan Stela sculptures to Greek vases. Music explores composition and genre—ranging from Pop Art theme variations, film music, and looping A) to Ancient Egyptian notation. French advances to full conversational fluency, covering travel, family, weather, sports, and Olympic contexts. Within each year, the class has the opportunity to play an instrument through ‘Listen to Me’ where a specialist Hampshire music teacher teaches the class.
Computational thinking accelerates from Scratch and Micro:bit coding to Mars Rover data analysis. A class set of Chromebooks ensures that students have access to technology as part of their everyday learning,
Students refine athletic control and sports leadership across gymnastics, cheerleading, netball, tag rugby, hockey, tennis, athletics, and lacrosse, with outdoor adventurous activity highlighted by the bi-annual Calshot Residential trip.
